Reading Tips
Here are some simple and effective ways to help you get better at reading and help with understanding the things you’re reading.
1. Make notes and highlight text!
Highlight and underline valuable information! Writing notes on the pages will help you stay focused and improve comprehension. You can also write down questions as you read so that you can ask a teacher or to help you learn the meaning of a word or phrase later. Do NOT stop to look up words. You need to GUESS the meaning first. See if you can read the paragraph or page and understand the meaning by using all of the words together.
2. Read in portions!
Long, complex reading can be made easier by breaking it up into pieces. Shorter segments will help you to retain (remember) what you’re reading. If you don’t understand that part, look up the words and read the part again.
3. Read things you personally enjoy!
Read things you personally enjoy! If you like sports, read biographies about those people, for example. You can increase your understanding by seeing how things connect with your life as well.
4. Set reading goals!
Find time to read or make the time to read. I usually read things before I go to sleep. I might only read a page or two, but I find it a good way to relax. And you will find it a good way to practice your English for a few minutes each day.
5. Read out loud!
Read things out loud, not loudly! You can softly read the words so you can hear yourself speaking in English. You should also record yourself reading out loud. It’s a great way to test your pronunciation.
6. Read with others!
This last one might be difficult for you to if you have a busy schedule. A book club or even an line reading group is a good way to talk about what you’ve read. Goodreads has a lot of people talking about the books they’ve read and even give reviews and recommendations. I suggest you visit that site and what people have to say. https://www.goodreads.com/
